Mobile Digits Lets You Take Calls From One Number On All Devices

"What Digits does is it really breaks down this century-long limitation of one phone number per device and one device per phone number".

'Digits works just like your T-Mobile phone number, except it is way more powerful, ' he said. The new functionality is expected to remove such confusions and there are options to use multiple numbers in a single smartphone device using T-Mobile Digits. With the service in place, users can receive calls to DIGITS even if the phone calls were originally placed to the home line, for example. There's also programs for PC and Mac computers.

What do you think of T-Mobile Digits?

'This isn't the first time you can add extra numbers to a device, but this IS the first time you can do it all - multiple numbers on one device and one number on multiple devices - and do it with carrier-grade quality. It also works the other way.

The service will be available for some Android phones, while any iPhone or iPad users will have to download the Digits. In an initial beta trial, the service will be free. "We've changed everything today", T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert said with typical UnCarrier bombast. It's a useful service that many people will take advantage of. No matter what device is used, only one number will show up when the user texts or calls from another device.

For a lot of businesses, that probably won't be a deal breaker. Technically the beta is closed, but T-Mobile's FAQ makes it sound like most customers are getting in. But it does appear that using DIGITS on competitive carriers' phones essentially will be a business-only capability.

One thing was missing from T-Mobile's lengthy video: any mention of Sprint.

DIGITS will use VoLTE. At least T-Mobile was relatively quick on the trigger when it came to taking the form down before it became a widespread (and widely reported) issue. T-Mobile claims it's been working on the new feature for years, saying that "T-Mobile's engineers built an entirely new IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) service management layer and Identity Management solution". For the most part, every device.

All the devices on which an end user uses DIGITS will automatically sync up with each other. The big innovation here may be allowing customers to use primary or secondary numbers across AT&T, Verizon, and other smartphones and devices.

The service also allows devices to have multiple numbers - one for work, and one for personal calls, for instance.

T-Mobile said it has been developing DIGITS for years and has patents that will make it hard for competitors to replicate the offering.
