Baylor Lawsuit Alleges 52 Rapes By Football Players In Four Years

A former Baylor University student filed a lawsuit against the school Friday for negligence and Title IX violations after she alleged two football players raped her in 2013, according to the Dallas Morning News' Sarah Mervosh. Lawyers for the Virginia woman - Elizabeth Doe in the lawsuit - claim to have uncovered evidence of far more sex crimes committed by Baylor players as the program rose to national prominence from 2011 to 2014. A student athletic trainer also accused Chatman of raping her; she was reassigned to a female team and her tuition was waived in exchange for signing an NDA.

The lawsuit claims that an entire series of sexual abuse has taken place within the Baylor program.

Beyond the specific rape allegations levied against Armstead and Chatman, the suit alleges Baylor promoted a culture that "used sex to sell" the program to high school players who were considering committing to the university. The anonymous woman's lawsuit claims two football players raped her after a party on April 18, 2013.

When the door opened, the roommate's boyfriend saw Doe partially unclothed on the floor, said "she is not fine", and told Armstead and Chatman he was calling 911, the lawsuit states. Both players had previously been named in police reports about rape on that date.

According to the lawsuit, campus officials didn't investigate her case until 2015.

Then-Baylor coach Art Briles was sacked last May after an investigation into the sexual assault scandal involving football players.

An internal investigation previous year found that the football program operated as if it was "above the rules" and that assistant coaches and staff interfered or stifled investigations into alleged assaults by players.

Doe says some "Bruins" hostesses also had sex with players after they made the team. Matt Rhule was hired as Baylor's football coach on December 7, leading to staff changes and Bennett leaving Baylor on good terms, per Rhoades' letter. The other had transferred. Art wasn't involved in anything like that, ' Cannon said.

Some have moved to new jobs, including Briles' son and former offensive coordinator, Kendal Briles to Florida Atlantic, and defensive coordinator Phil Bennett to Arizona State.
