Detroit Auto Show: What You Missed

Detroit Auto Show: What You Missed

The gull-wing BMW i8 is on display at the 2017 North American International Auto Show on 9 January at Cobo Hall in Detroit. Assembly plants are big investments, costing well over $1 billion, and automakers are unlikely to change course.

Lucas said that this was true for his own brand, but added that something can be both a throwback and still be exciting and new.

"We made this decision based on our commitment to make our products close to our customers", Hachigo said.

The automaker said at the auto show today that a new version of Ford Ranger truck would be built at Wayne starting in 2019 and a new Ford Bronco in 2020.

Carmakers from Toyota Motor Corp to General Motors Co to Volkswagen AG are adding more SUVs to their product plans, amid forecasts that SUVs and pickup trucks could soon make up two-thirds of US light vehicle sales, up from 56 percent in 2015 and just under 60 percent a year ago. Trump told his millions of followers that GM was importing Mexican-made Chevrolet Cruzes and threatened a "big border tax" if it didn't start making them in the US instead. "This is just the beginning - much more to follow". GM started importing the Cruze hatchback about five months ago, because demand for it isn't strong enough to justify installing the tooling for it in Lordstown, Ohio, where the Cruze sedan is produced. The automaker has 12 factories in the U.S. It will go on sale in the USA market in late 2017.

GM is also hanging some new hardware after the Chevy Bolt won the 2017 vehicle of the Year at the Detroit show.

- PLATEAUING SALES: After an unprecedented seven-year streak of sales increases and record sales of 17.55 million in 2016, USA sales of new cars and trucks are expected to slow down slightly in 2017.

Chevrolet Traverse. General Motors Co highlighted two redesigned sport utility vehicles in Detroit, including a new generation of the Chevrolet Traverse, a family hauling SUV that will compete with the likes of the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Queue the fawning US political class now gleefully perpetuating the illusion that the new president-elect of the United States is anything but a huckster. "That's sort of that Holy Grail we've been wanting to get to", said IHS Auto Analyst Mike Wall.

Here's what you might've missed, and check back tomorrow for more.

The NAIAS will feature industry preview days on Wednesday, Jan. 11, and Thursday, Jan. 12. It will continue its global dominance if we never take its overall importance for granted. The state is the number one vehicle-producing state per capita and among the top vehicle producers in the U.S.
