Google unveils 'Super Chat' earnings scheme for YouTube content creators

Now the video-sharing/viewing service has announced a new feature that is aimed at helping creators monetise live streams.

"For creators, this means Super Chat does double duty: keeping their conversations and connections with fans meaningful and lively while also giving creators a new way to make money", product manager Barbara Macdonald says.

YouTube has launched "Super Chat" feature for the fans and creators to connect with one another, by allowing fans to pay to pin their comments on top of the live stream to get the attention of their favorite creators. When a viewer purchases a Super Chat, their message is highlighted and pinned at the top of the chat for up to 5 hours.

YouTube started testing Super Chat in beta today with a few creators, including iHasCupquake, Great Library (buzzbean11), and Alex Wassabi. Google is yet to confirm whether it will be available for all creators, but said it plans to roll out to more users by the end of this month. Keep in mind that Super Chat has a moderation tool where content creators can also blacklist inappropriate chat words or block harassing viewers. Once you're in a live stream, you can click an icon for the Super Chat purchase, set the amount you wish to spend on the Super Chat, enter the message you want to show, and the click "Buy and Send".

2- Select "Send a Super Chat". In theory, this will help the viewer get noticed by the streamer, so that they can get a shout-out, or more easily get a question answered.

Super Chat is an initiative which aims at assisting creators earn more revenues while connecting with their fans during live streams.

Meanwhile, YouTube is bidding its monetization feature Fan Funding goodbye this week. As YouTube introduces Super Chat, it is getting rid of a previous method of paying creators called Fan Funding. Creators in 20 countries will be able to engage with fans in over 40 regions initially. This older feature is being replaced because Youtube states that "it never achieved widespread usage outside of live streams, where we saw the majority of revenue". Although the feature will remain active on enabled channels for now, it will be discontinued on February 28.
