New Super Series flyer from McLaren

New Super Series flyer from McLaren

The new model, also expected to be named after its power output (so expect a much higher number than 650) has already been spied testing, but McLaren has released a first image of the vehicle showing it's new carbon fibre Monocage II body structure. But that's all about to change in the near future, as it'll soon unveil the first of a wave of cars that'll make up its second-generation Super Series lineup, which now includes the 12C and 12C Spider, the 650S Coupe and Spider, and the 675LT Coupe and Spider.

The arrival of the P14 kick starts the British supercar maker's ambitious Track22 business plan that will see McLaren launch 15 new models by 2022. The second generation super series is also the first replacement of a product family by the British sports vehicle manufacturer. The new chassis will also ensure a better centre of gravity which will help to the car's overall performance. The 12C Spider followed in 2012 and in 2014 McLaren introduced the 650S Coupe and 650S Spider.

The limited edition McLaren 675LT Coupe and 675LT Spider debuted in 2015. The automaker also speaks of "excellent all-round visibility", but we think more enticing is the detail about being able to option the "Visible Monocage" - which brings an exposed carbon fiber look on the inside section of the A-pillars. There is no mention of which vehicle will roll out first, but we do know it'll use a new carbon-fiber structure called Monocage II.

While McLaren has released the Monocage II image, the company won't be revealing full details until the Geneva show in early March.

The McLaren 720 is being developed under the project name P14 and will be powered by an all-new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 instead of the 3.8-litre unit doing duty in the 650 S. It is also being speculated that the McLaren 720 S will come equipped with a hybrid powertrain.

The look of the new auto is expected to usher in a very different style for forthcoming McLaren models, too, with 15 new cars expected from the company as part of its Track 22 business plan between now and 2022.
