Wayne Rooney breaks Bobby Charlton's goal record for Manchester United

And Rooney will no longer have to field questions about when he'll break Sir Bobby Charlton's record.

Inevitably the moment was tinged with disappointment for Charlton but not for long. However, I can honestly say that I'm delighted for Wayne.

Rooney is already England's leading male scorer, having surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton in September 2015.

He scored 17 goals in his first season, the highlight being a thunderous volley from 30 meters against Newcastle in April 2005 that will go down as one of the best goals in his career.

"Wayne is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England", said Charlton, stripped of two distinctions in as many years by Rooney, but a great advocate of the younger man.

The match against Stoke City ended 1 - 1 as United remain in sixth position, five points ahead of Everton.
