Wayne Rooney breaks Bobby Charlton's goal record for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney breaks Bobby Charlton's goal record for Manchester United

And Rooney will no longer have to field questions about when he'll break Sir Bobby Charlton's record.

Inevitably the moment was tinged with disappointment for Charlton but not for long. However, I can honestly say that I'm delighted for Wayne.

Rooney is already England's leading male scorer, having surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton in September 2015.

He scored 17 goals in his first season, the highlight being a thunderous volley from 30 meters against Newcastle in April 2005 that will go down as one of the best goals in his career.

"Wayne is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England", said Charlton, stripped of two distinctions in as many years by Rooney, but a great advocate of the younger man.

The match against Stoke City ended 1 - 1 as United remain in sixth position, five points ahead of Everton.

"We hope it's not against us clearly, we'd much rather Crouchy got his 100th goal, which is really important to him". Lloris dived to gather Raheem Sterling's cross but he allowed the ball to slip through his fingers and De Bruyne was there to capitalize with a simple finish. He was outstanding earlier in the season when Stoke nicked a point at Old Trafford and replicated the feat again today, making a number of impressive saves.

And Jesse Lingard struck the top of the bar late on as United desperately looked to find an equaliser before Rooney's heroics.

"It is fair Swansea won, no - but was it deserved, yes".

But Bournemouth came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and were quickly level through Josh King, who converted from Adam Smith's cross.

Tony Pulis' West Brom continued their excellent form with a 2-0 victory over struggling Sunderland. "It is a bit of a odd feeling as obviously we wanted three points but didn't get it". With only two points at their account after six rounds it was no wonder that they were knocked down at the bottom of the league table, but individual quality of Stoke's squad had to come out and eventually it did. Joshua King canceled out Christian Kabasele's header and, after Troy Deeney nodded Watford back in front, Benik Afobe produced the second equalizer in the 82nd minute.
