#BringBackKP: Kevin Pietersen bids skipper Alastair Cook goodbye in some style

#BringBackKP: Kevin Pietersen bids skipper Alastair Cook goodbye in some style

Two big blows followed by flailing form with the bat may have prompted two stalwarts to let go of the burden of captaincy but there remains absolutely no doubt that world cricket still needs Cook and Dhoni for atleast another 2-3 years. Cook, possibly shuffling down to number three, could well find his batting reinvigorated; aged 32, he is two-thirds the way towards usurping Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in Test history.

Cook, a keen runner himself, knew his time on the captaincy treadmill was over.

Pietersen wasted little time pleaded his case, tweeting #BringBackKP shortly after the Cook news broke.

However, he said he no longer could give 100 per cent to the role and departs on the back of a disappointing 4-0 series drubbing in India this winter.

"He looked exhausted at the end of that".

That's pretty young to be captain of your country, so we've given him a bit of help. But this statement made by him could spark a new debate. "There are good times, it's not all criticism", he said.

"Here is a guy of incredible mental steel".

Asked if the Pietersen situation tarnished his time at the helm, he added: "I don't think it will".

"They'll be mixed feelings for Alastair this morning".

Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has finally chosen to bury the hatchet with Alastair Cook who recently stepped down from England's Test captaincy.

He does not expect a future with Root instead in charge of Cook to present any problems, however.

"At this moment in time, I don't really see any other candidate".

"I think Ben Stokes has got a leadership role at some stage, the way he's improved and matured as a cricketer and he's one of those people that people gravitate to, he's got that personality".

"I think he has been an outstanding captain", said Gale.

As everything around him was sackcloth and ashes, Cook stayed as captain of the Test team, and winning the 2015 Ashes in England allowed him a redemption of sorts. He's a great man and he's still got great things to do for his country. When Pietersen did make a come back he was instrumental in Cook's finest triumph, that Test series win in India.

"I fully respect it", he told Sky Sports News.

"Ultimately I think the team in the a year ago played some good cricket without pushing on - and as captain, you are part of that", he told Press Association Sport.

"Everything comes to an end, and has a shelf life".

He tendered his resignation to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Colin Graves on Sunday.
