Chicago Gun Violence Continues: Two Young Girls Shot Just Four Miles Apart

Chicago Police said the shooting took place on the 1900 block of W. 57th street at approximately 7:10 p.m. (8:10 p.m. ET). Doctors told the family if she survives it is likely she will never walk again.

Takiya, 11, passed away at Comer Children's Hospital, but community activist Andrew Holmes said his niece was being kept on life support to protect her organs for donation.

Your donation will be processed by Assata's Daughters on behalf of Takiya and her family, who will receive 100% of the funds raised. However, Carroll said that the shootings were not related and neither girl was the intended target.

The two girls have been identified as 11-year-old Takiya Holmes and 12-year-old Kanari Bowers. Family members told the Chicago Tribune that she was out playing with friends at the time of incident.

"Hopefully, she can pull though", she said. "But it's grim and we want prayers to go up for her". She was shot in the neck and the bullet severed her spinal cord.

"But she doesn't have any brain activity".

Kanari remained on life support Tuesday morning at Stroger Hospital.

Holmes and Lopez say they'll be out at a community rally with police officers tonight at the corner where Kanari was shot. "Further tests will reveal that tomorrow". "People who they were shooting at, they know who was shooting at them" Andrew Holmes said. Officials have no one in custody and are still investigating both incidents.

Djuan Bowers, an uncle of the 12-year-old victim, said to WLS, "Instead of a gun, pick up a pencil, or a book".
