European Council President labels United States a threat to Europe

European Council President labels United States a threat to Europe

Tusk's placement of Europe's long-term transatlantic ally alongside polities and ideologies with whom Europe has tense relationships was a frank re-categorization that reflects the worries of many European national leaders regarding the Trump presidency.

"The first threat, an external one, is related to the new geopolitical situation in the world and around Europe", European Council president Tusk said in the letter obtained by AFP.

According to Tusk, the new United States administration seems to have "put into question the last 70 years of American foreign policy".

President Trump's administration is a threat to the EU alongside the aggressive and assertive superpowers of Russian Federation and China, the union's president has warned.

"We can not surrender to those who want to weaken or invalidate the transatlantic bond, without which global order and peace can not survive", he said.

The letter continued: "We should remind our American friends of their own motto: United we stand, divided we fall".

According to Tusk, the European Union is facing one of the biggest challenges in its 60-year history. He does place it lowest, but in Donald Tusk's view the European Union is under pressure from all sides. He has also criticised German Chancellor Angela Merkel, particularly her welcoming policy towards refugees.

In a recent interview with Germany's Bild newspaper, Mr Trump confirmed his view of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance as "obsolete".

Tusk's letter came a few days before European Union leaders are due to meet in Malta to discuss the future of the European Union as a 27-member state bloc. He has also dismissed the European Union as "basically a vehicle for Germany".

Despited continued remarks about the importance of transatlantic relations and cooperation, the USA president's ban on refugees (which most EU leaders strongly condemned) and arrivals from seven majority-Muslim countries (which also affects dual nationals from the 27 EU member states) will have done little to change a rapidly growing feeling in a number of European capitals about the direction the U.S. administration is heading.

On Tuesday, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel tweeted that the United States "would be making a mistake if it turned its back on Europe".
