Federer savors unexpected title over long-time rival Nadal

For good measure, Federer also became the oldest Grand Slam champion since Ken Rosewall won the 1972 Australian Open aged 37, prevailing in a 3hrs and 37mins classic to secure his first Aussie crown since 2010 with all five titles coming against different opponents. Wimbledon is where he figures he'll have his next real chance, over the French Open which comes first. After that he'd play Indian Wells and Miami before a European clay court schedule he hadn't yet fully planned.

"I've seen him play before and he's a tough competitor and it was tough conditions out there today". As I walked in, they woke up.

But it was Federer, putting six months of knee and back injury problems behind him, who emerged triumphant for only the third time from the nine Grand Slam finals the duo have shared, edging an epic fifth set that reached the heights of their classic showdowns of the past. And in a week's time I think the pain in my legs will go away'.

"People seemed genuinely really happy for me that I won a slam again, particularly this one (because) maybe it's a bit of a fairytale after the comeback to come back this way", he told a packed media gathering. "It was an incredible half an hour, right there". The girls were just super-excited to see the trophy.

"Honestly I believed I could do it, the question was how's Novak (Djokovic) going to play, how's Andy (Murray) going to play, Rafa and everybody. So Wimbledon, I know I have a better shot", Federer was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail on Tuesday.

"She's been there when I had no titles".

Rafael Nadal has insisted that his recent stronghold over Roger Federer at the Australian Open will have little bearing on their "special" final this weekend. I've got a month to reflect now on everything.

Roger that: Roger Federer with the trophy on Monday. I am very exhausted right now, my legs hurt like mad and my back's stiff too because I didn't take any treatment, plus I was dancing last night.

"French Open - if you're not in the draw you can't win it so I hope to be in the draw unlike past year".

"I can't compare this one to any other one except for maybe the French Open in '09". The audience was more than double the average for past year (up 107% from 547,000), Novak Djokovic defeating Andy Murray.
