Giants will release running back Rashad Jennings, free up more cap space

The calls weren't easy ones to make, but the New York Giants did the right thing for the upcoming season, releasing veteran wide receiver Victor Cruz and running back Rashad Jennings on Monday.

The decision by the Giants to cut Cruz will free up $7.5 million in cap space, so it's not completely shocking. In three years, he played in 40 games and rushed for 2,095 yards and 10 touchdowns.

In 2014, Cruz suffered a devastating knee injury against the Philadelphia Eagles, tearing his patellar tendon.

Cruz caught 39 passes for 586 yards this past season, but the Giants are clearly confident with their two young talented receivers, Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard, moving forward.

In the final four games of the regular season, Perkins had double-digit carries and averaged 4.37 yards per carry. Both were fan favorites, both bled Giants blue, but truthfully - both had to step aside in this ruthless business.

But at 30 years old, it wouldn't be wise to say that Cruz's days as a contributor are over.

"I pretty much grew up in front of the eyes of this entire organisation", Cruz said in a statement released by the team.

But not long after Cruz signed that deal, the injuries started to kick in. "Quite frankly, I felt like we left our defense hanging in some areas".

Cruz, 30, had a stellar start with the Giants after he was an undrafted free agent out of University of MA. The 49ers have a need for wide receiver help, but Bleeding Green Nation offered up plenty of good reasons not to take a run at Cruz.

Even with that said, there's little question that Cruz will land on his feet and will get another chance to prove that he's still got it.
