Mastermind Of 1993 World Trade Center Bombing, Dies

His son, Ammar, said he had been phoned by a USA representative to say his father had died in prison in SC.

The Egyptian radical Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman died at about 5:40 a.m. of natural causes battling long with diabetes and coronary artery disease at the Butner Federal Medical Center in North Carolina.

He was not convicted for the bombing, but was believed to be linked to the six men who were convicted, and is said to have helped orchestrate the attack, which killed six people and left more than 1,000 injured.

The mastermind of numerous bomb plots in NY in the early 1990s has died in prison in the USA, his family says.

In the mid-1980s, Abdel-Rahman made his way to Afghanistan, where he built a strong rapport with former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

He also plotted to blow up the Holland Lincoln tunnels as well as other NY landmarks, like the United Nations and the NY headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Abdel-Rahman reportedly issued a fatwa against the secular Egyptian writer Farag Fouda who was later murdered.

Despite being on a State Department blacklist, he was granted a tourist visa by the US Embassy in Sudan in 1990.

Rahman was serving a life sentence on terrorism-related charges.

He didn't just preach hate, though - the man who became better known as only the "Blind Sheik" planned attacks against Americans, one of which he carried out successfully on February 26, 1993. So much for a 'martyr's death.' Abdel-Rahman was 78.

During a sentencing hearing, he gave a 90 minute speech in which he claimed he had not "committed any crime except telling people about Islam".
