MP Says New US Sanctions against Iran Breach of JCPOA

The Treasury Department announced that 13 people and 12 companies face new restrictions, including several entities that support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and help the Iranian government procure materials for its missile program.

Iran "was playing with fire" by testing medium-range ballistic missiles, Trump said in a tweet Friday.

The official, however, added that the new sanctions do not mean that America has abandoned commitments it made under the nuclear deal to lift measures aimed at Iran's nuclear programme.

In apparent defiance to the new sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump's administration, Iran held a military exercise on Saturday to test its missile and radar systems.

"In response to the new U.S. move, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take reciprocal measures to impose restrictions on United States individuals and companies having had a role in creating and supporting the regional terrorist and extremist groups and in the massacre of and crackdown on the defenseless people of the region", the Foreign Ministry said.

"The President and national security adviser wants to put Iran on notice but haven't specified what that is", a reporter asked Spicer at the daily briefing. While such an approach could satisfy hawks in Washington who were never comfortable with President Barack Obama's tentative rapprochement with Iran, it could also unsettle domestic Iranian politics as President Hassan Rouhani seeks re-election in May.

The U.S. slapped new sanctions on Iran on Friday after the Trump administration signaled it wanted to punish Tehran for its latest ballistic missile test.

Iran's missile test doesn't violate the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and Western powers, but critics say it violates U.N. Resolution 2231, which was passed a few days after the historic pact.

After much criticism and speculation over alleged missile tests in Iran earlier in the week, the nation's Defense Minister Brig.

Despite the heated words, he said the U.S. was not considering raising the number of American forces in the Middle East to address Iran's posturing, but warned that they "had the capabilities to do so".

Iran has confirmed that it had tested a ballistic missile, but denied that it violated the terms of the nuclear deal.
