Sony Announces 3-Layer Stacked CMOS Image Sensor with DRAM for Smartphones

It works like sensors in its dedicated cameras, with DRAM built in as a third layer on top of the conventional two-layer stacked image sensor. The Japanese company believes that the DRAM layer enables the sensor to deliver fast data readout speeds which will make it possible to capture still images of fast-moving subjects with minimal focal plane distortion as well as super slow motion videos. When shooting still images, the sensor can read one 19.3-megapixel image in 1/120th of a second, which is around 4x faster than current sensors.

Sony might not be your favorite smartphone maker, but the company surely rules supreme when it comes to image sensors. The sensor is able to reach these high readout speeds because the circuit that is used to convert the analog video signal from pixels to a digital signal has been doubled from a 2-tier construction to a 4-tier construction.

Now, Sony has laid the foundation down for super slow-motion, announcing a new smartphone sensor capable of shooting at 1000fps.

Sony's new CMOS image sensor for smartphones is the first to feature 3-layer stacked configuration with DRAM for improved speed and lower power consumption.

The second feature can record 1080p video at a maximum of 1,000fps, which produces some incredible slow-mo effects. The other advantage is the ability to capture high frame rate video at a high resolution.

Soon you might be able to record super slow motion videos from your smartphone itself, as in at amazingly slow speeds like you see in action movies that, for example, gives some sense to the utterly bewildering fighting scenes.

Since most flagship phones rely on Sony for the camera sensors, commercial adoption of Sony's achievement is inevitable, but it will take some time to trickle down to next-gen flagships.
