Star Wars Actor Diego Luna to Play Lead in Scarface Remake

The remake of perhaps the greatest gangster film of all time in Scarface hit a production snag this week as its director had to leave the film according to Variety.

Aside from that, Independent has learned that there has been a bad news since the project director Antoine Fuqua needs to be pulled out in order to fast track a sequel to Denzel Washington's "The Equalizer". Though Fuqua may be out, film company Universal reportedly remains interested in getting production started this spring.

Now, Universal is looking for a possible new helmer for what would be the third big-screen adaptationof "Scarface". As of yesterday, the production is down a director but has gained a star in the form of Rogue One's Diego Luna. What's more, the trade reports that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Diego Luna is set to play the new film's title gangster. And then there's the remake of Scarface, to which he's been attached for some time. Call me insane, but I would like to see Antoine Fuqua do something original instead of simply keep a seat warm on this remake train.

The pic is a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. Penning the latest draft is Terence Winter from Boardwalk Empire.Previous iterations included Jonathan Herman from Straight Outta Compton. Al Pacino famously portrayed Tony Montana in the 1983 version about a Cuban refugee who becomes involved in the drug trade in 1980's Miami Florida.
