Trump Threatens To Revoke Federal Funds For UC Berkeley After Anti-Fascist Protest

Trump Threatens To Revoke Federal Funds For UC Berkeley After Anti-Fascist Protest

A handful of protesters - not Berkeley itself, university officials said - broke windows, threw rocks, set a fire and launched fireworks outside a student union building Wednesday night where Yiannopoulos, a white supremacist pundit and avid Trump supporter, was scheduled to speak.

Nonetheless, he reiterated the legal basis for the decision to let the event proceed, and quoted UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman, who wrote that universities "support free speech and condemn censorship for two reasons - to ensure that positive, helpful, illuminating messages can circulate widely, and to expose hateful or unsafe ideas that, if never engaged or rebutted, would gain traction in the darker corners of our society".

Violent protests erupted overnight on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley.

Rioters reportedly used firecrackers, smashed windows, and assaulted several attendees with weapons.

The Berkeley College Republicans, the group who organized the speech, issued a statement after the protests, calling the Free Speech Movement "dead".

The speech at UC Berkeley, which was cancelled, would have been his last on his anti-political correctness unsafe F****t Tour.

The multiple-promotion MMA champion claimed to have helped a "guy being jumped by thugs" at the protest.

President Trump has since threatened to defund Berkeley after the cancelation of Yiannopoulos.

In a CNN interview, Milo Yiannopoulos described the events as "an expression of political violence".

The university specifically blamed "150 masked agitators" for inciting the riots and violence at the protests.

Students confronted Yiannopoulos as he attempted to deliver an expected hate-filled speech at the entrance of the Martin Luther King, Jr.

However, Nassirian said the UC Berkeley would have a "significant defense" in such a case as the university attempted to control the violence, not commit it.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms the violence and unlawful behavior that was on display, and deeply regret that those tactics will now overshadow the efforts to engage in legitimate and lawful protests against the performer's presence and perspectives", the statement said.

Police ordered the protesters to disperse and the student newspaper The Daily Californian reported rubber bullets were fired.
