USA Wrestling banned from competing in Iran at Freestyle World Cup

USA Wrestling banned from competing in Iran at Freestyle World Cup

The Iranian government responded to the news of the ban by announcing it planned to limit visas to Americans in addition to other measures. The 2018 freestyle World Cup is in Iowa City, Iowa, and the Iranian team is expected to qualify. Iran denies U.S. claims that the missile test violated a United Nations resolution, and said it would impose its own sanctions on USA individuals and companies which it says have supported extremist groups in Syria and elsewhere.

USA Wrestling said on Monday the United States would send a team to Iran, where U.S. freestyle wrestlers have participated in competitions since 1998.

USA wrestler Jordan Burroughs, who won a gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics and participated in the Rio Games past year, said he was "bummed" by the news that he would not be able to compete February 16 and 17, according to NBC Sports.

"Iran unmoved by threats as we derive security for our people", he said.

"The Freestyle World Cup is the annual World dual meet championship, one of the most important events that United World Wrestling hosts each year".

Iran will bar US wrestlers from a major global meet this month, the country's foreign ministry announced Friday.

The International Wrestling Federation and the Iranian Wrestling Federation also lobbied to allow the US wrestling team into Iran for the tournament.

It had appeared that Iranian authorities would not be swayed, but their apparent U-turn could be seen as a victory for the bargaining power of world sport. The International Wrestling Federation and the Iranian Wrestling Federation appealed the initial denial on behalf of the American wrestlers.

American wrestlers who have traveled to Iran have been overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Iranians, who have showered them with carpets and free meals.

Nenad Lalovic, president of United World Wrestling, the sport's global federation, said it was working towards a solution. Smith recalled. In the streets of Tehran afterward, people rushed to take photos of him. Wolves such as the arrogant government of America.

A senior Iranian cleric vowed, meanwhile, that his country would continue its missile program despite threats from the Trump administration that it was preparing to levy new sanctions.

"Iran is playing with fire - they don't appreciate how "kind" President Obama was to them".
