5 bodies found after helicopter crashes in UK mountains

That's preventing the coastguard committing more search and rescue helicopters into the mountains at the moment.

North Wales Police did not immediately reveal the precise location the helicopter was found, in order "to allow a dignified and unhindered recovery of the bodies".

Kevin and Ruth Burke are both thought to have been on board the helicopter they owned when it went missing on the way to Ireland.

Initially the rescue operation was focused on Caernarfon Bay as well as the countryside around Caernarfon and local airfields.

"All of that combined has given us a new focus, in and around the Snowdonia National Park".

A land-based search is being conducted in the Snowdonia area by North Wales police and Mountain Rescue Teams.

Police said Thursday that the operation to recover victims' bodies might have to be suspended overnight "due to worsening weather conditions" and the hard terrain.

"No air assets have been sent out by the Coastguard".

The north west Wales coroner, Dewi Pritchard-Jones called for the public's continued support in staying away from the crash site.

Airbus Helicopters - the manufacturers of the Twin Squirrel, a popular utility helicopter used by police forces and private charter companies - have said they are "standing by to provide support".

It has a cruising speed of 140 miles (225 kilometres) per hour and a range of almost 440 miles.

A major search is under way in the Irish Sea after a helicopter failed to arrive as scheduled.

"The helicopters have returned to their bases and at this stage, there aren't plans to continue aerial searches unless the weather improves".

The helicopter went missing over the Irish Sea last night (29 March).

Five people were on board the privately-owned aircraft, which left Milton Keynes en route to Dublin.

Air traffic controllers lost radar contact with the helicopter and notified HM Coastguard at 4.15pm.

A spokesman for Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan said his department was in contact with the Irish Embassy in London and would assist in any way necessary. It is thought it was descending to try to get under low cloud as weather conditions worsened on Wednesday afternoon.

But, she said the search was still ongoing.
