At least 3 killed in Oakland building fire

Inspectors discovered that a California building in a rundown neighborhood lacked fire extinguishers, smoke detectors in every apartment and a working sprinkler system just three days before a blaze erupted and killed three low-income residents.

"This is another Ghost Ship because of the violations on the building, things aren't up to code and things weren't fixed, and that's always been a concern", Lowery said.

Alameda County sheriff's spokesman Sgt.

Authorities said on Monday that three people were killed in the blaze and a fourth person was missing.

Firefighters performed several rescues, officials said. Urojas Community Center assists about 60 people with transitional housing and services, Cook said. City records show the complaint was verified and a letter of violation sent to the building's owner. One person was still unaccounted for late Monday, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The building's owner served the tenant with a 30-day eviction notice last week, but they were trying to stay and planning to file a breach of contract lawsuit, according to Cook. It's unclear what role if any those conditions played in the fire. Kim did not return telephone calls from The Associated Press.

The building is near the intersection of San Pablo and Mead avenue, according to fire officials.

Residents also included a 9-year-old boy who escaped in his underwear and socks. "I thought about the other fire they had down by Fruitvale", a fire victim told ABC7 News.

Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Erik Logan says rescuers spotted what looked like a body on the third floor, but crews had to retreat before they could confirm.

Firefighters battle an early morning apartment fire Monday in Oakland, Calif.

An Oakland Fire tweet posted at 6:09 a.m. said that crews were making rescues. "If any building around here needed to be rehabbed that one did right there", said a man who did not give ABC7 News his name. "I think there were a lot of issues going on in that building", Cook said.

The building is in a mixed-use area with warehouses and some homes. Immediately following the blaze, the city cracked down on warehouse spaces, artist collectives and other venues that may not have been up to code.

In December, three dozen partygoers died in an Oakland warehouse fire that was the deadliest structure fire in the U.S.in more than a decade. You have now viewed your allowance of free articles.
