Feds Investigate Deadly Fire Sparked By Recharging Hoverboard

A veteran firefighter rushing to tackle a deadly house fire which killed a three-year-old girl, has died after a teen driving a stolen auto smashed into his vehicle.

Since that fire on Friday, people have come by the house in the 2500 block of Lexington Street in Harrisburg's uptown neighborhood to leave stuffed animals, candles, and flowers on the porch. She was pronounced dead late Saturday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital. The other did not survive.

Enterline says the fire has been ruled accidental and was caused by a hoverboard plugged in to a charging unit. They are now being treated at Lehigh Valley Medical Center.

"We have lost everything in our home", said mum-of-three Clare. Hughes' father and a male teenager were treated for inhaling smoke and have been released from the hospital.

One of the key questions, Wolfson said, will be to determine whether the hoverboard from Friday's fire was one of roughly 501,000 of the self-balancing scooters recalled by the federal agency previous year after several models manufactured in China with lithium-ion battery packs were reported to ignite after overheating.

The girl's family and the fire department both suffered a heartbreaking loss that night. Fire Chief Brian Enterline said that DeVoe was hit by another vehicle at an intersection, while he was en route to the station house to pick up his gear before making his way to the scene of the fire. They were all later transferred to Lehigh Valley burn center, where Ashanti died from her injuries, PennLive reported.

The memorial comes as the city's fire chief warned parents to get rid their hoverboards, the kind of toy he said caused it all to happen.

There has been over 50 reports in 24 states of unreasonable fire started by self-balancing scooters.

Police said Kendall was driving a vehicle that was recently reported stolen. Kendall was charged with DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving death or injury, receiving stolen property, false reports to police, driving without a license and other traffic violations.
