France Issues Terror Warning After School Shooting

France Issues Terror Warning After School Shooting

The second suspect is still on the run.

A suspect is now on the run, French media have suggested it could well be an incident between two students.

However, another police source indicated that the shooter acted alone.

Police cordoned off the area and anxious residents gathered outside, along with several emergency vehicles.

Eight people, including the headmaster, have been injured, according to a spokesman for the French Interior Ministry.

The visibly shaken student told BFM TV on Thursday that "it was total panic" at the Alexis de Tocqueville school in Grasse, the picturesque perfume capital of France.

The shooting took place at the Lycee Tocqueville, in Grasse.

"I went to close the windows and saw a guy who looked at me in the eyes".

"He seemed to be a student and not very big".

Local emergency services told residents on social media to stay at home.

But its perhaps understandable that the French government immediately triggered its terror attack alert app given the country is still on high alert after a string of attacks by jihadists since January 2015 that has claimed around 230 lives. Two students were slightly injured. Police responded at the school and arrested a man.

Staff from the International Monetary Fund office were evacuated and armed military officers and police guarded the area, in a chic district of western Paris.

Thursday's incident came a day after a package arrived at the German finance ministry containing low-grade explosives, like those used in firecrackers.

The last major attack at a school was in 2012, when an Islamic extremist from Toulouse, Mohamed Merah, shot dead three children and a teacher at a Jewish school in the city before being killed by police.

A Greek group called "Conspiracy of Fire Cells" sent the package to Mr Schaeuble, according to the Athens News Agency.

All schools in the vicinity of Grasse have been placed on lockdown as a safety measure, since the shooting prompted a red alert on the nation's Vigipirate terror warning system.
