Iron Fist co-creator defends the show against whitewashing controversy

Iron Fist co-creator defends the show against whitewashing controversy

This allows him to focus his chi energy into a single, powerful blow, or, as the original comics put it time and again, make his fist "like unto a thing of iron".

In defending the new Netflix series "Iron Fist" from accusations of cultural appropriation, comic co-creator Roy Thomas landed in hot water this week after insisting in an interview that the comic book hero "isn't Oriental".

If it seemed like the drama had reduced to a low sizzle, new comments from Jessica Henwick (who plays Colleen Wing in the show) and Lewis Tan (who plays the minor villain Zhou Cheng in one episode) have brought it back with a vengeance. I have so little patience for some of the feelings that some people have. They're all valid questions, but I'm more interested in exploring the mysteries afoot and the teases for what's to come. "I know Oriental isn't the right word now, either", he said. Danny's stubborn refusal to accept his responsibly as the protector of K'un-Lun has infuriated Davos - perhaps enough that by Season 2 he'll (we hope) transform into his comic book alter-ego the Steel Serpent, Iron Fist's dark equal. Share your thoughts with me. So I was excited. It was a long process, and it got to the point where they were talking about my availability and my dates. You know the guy.

"And obviously I can do my own fight sequences, so those would be more dynamic".

Despite Thomas' pleas that "if they had decided to make Iron Fist an Asian, that would have been fine with me, too", many people took umbrage with his answer-in particular, his usage of the term "Oriental". He revealed just how close we could have been to getting an Asian-American in the title role. That's what I've been dealing with my whole life.

There's the presence of Davos (Sacha Dhawan), Danny Rand's best friend from K'un-Lun, who comes to NY to bring him back.

"Iron Fist" very much represents a break from the other Marvel shows on Netflix.

"It is a missed opportunity". Sometimes two. It feels like the editing is trying to disguise some really shaky work from the actors, stunt performers and directors. It would've been a courageous thing to do, for sure, for Marvel. It is certainly not as bad as numerous other critics are making it out to be, and it has made me very excited to see Danny interact with the other Marvel heroes. I think, personally, it would've paid off. I think that's super interesting and we've never seen that. "It would have been a different show". If somebody had suggested, "You want to make it so he's Asian?"

In that episode, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) is shown an old and very secret 1948 Chinese government video of an Iron Fist, establishing that Iron Fist is a mantle that's been passed down. Perhaps it won't. But it will happen, sooner or later, and Tan deserves respect for fighting the good fight.

Netflix's latest Marvel series, Iron Fist, has been clouded with more criticism and poor reviews than the streaming network is used to for a new television series, particularly one that is a part of a multi-million-dollar superhero franchise.
