In defending the new Netflix series "Iron Fist" from accusations of cultural appropriation, comic co-creator Roy Thomas landed in hot water this week after insisting in an interview that the comic book hero "isn't Oriental".

In that episode, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) is shown an old and very secret 1948 Chinese government video of an Iron Fist, establishing that Iron Fist is a mantle that's been passed down. Perhaps it won't. But it will happen, sooner or later, and Tan deserves respect for fighting the good fight.

Netflix's latest Marvel series, Iron Fist, has been clouded with more criticism and poor reviews than the streaming network is used to for a new television series, particularly one that is a part of a multi-million-dollar superhero franchise.
