Kentucky native nominated for James Beard cookbook award

Raskin was nominated in the "Local Impact" category - a new category for 2017 - for her pieces "Feeding the Prison System", "Free Crabs!" and "A Significant Goodbye".

The James Beard Foundation - named for the beloved cookbook author, kitchen instructor and champion of the culinary arts - is a non-profit dedicated to supporting American culinary heritage.

The James Beard Awards, often called the Oscars of the food world, will be presented at a ceremony May 1 in Chicago.

Book award and journalism winners will be announced April 25.

The finalists of the James Beard Foundation Awards were announced this afternoon and one familiar face has been named to the shortlist for Best Chef Southwest.

The James Beard Awards have been around since 1990, honoring the nation's top chefs and recognizing culinary excellence.

On the semi-finalist list in that latter category, as we learned last month, were also the likes of Saison's Joshua Skenes, Liholiho Yacht Club's Ravi Kapur, Juhu Beach Club's Preeti Mistry, and Mourad's Mourad Lahlou. "A Chef's Life" won a Peabody Award in 2014 and a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Lifestyle/Culinary/Travel Program in 2015. The full list of finalists has been posted online.

The semifinalists, announced in February, included in national categories Paul and Joe Bartolotta of Bartolotta Restaurants for outstanding restaurateur and chef Tory Miller's L'Etoile in Madison for outstanding restaurant.

In 2016, the Washington area had two finalists for the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category: Peter Chang (Peter Chang) and Silverman.

-- Chris Hastings of Birmingham's Hot and Hot Fish Club, for best chef in the South in 2012.
