Two Indian Muslim Clerics Go Missing in Pakistan

Two Indian Muslim Clerics Go Missing in Pakistan

72 hours after two elderly clerics of Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Dargah, Asif Nizami (82) and Nazim Ali Nizami (66), disappeared from Karachi and Lahore airports respectively, there is still no information about their whereabouts. "We would also thank Pakistan media", Aamir Nizami said.

"We are pursuing this further with the Government of Pakistan", Indian External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, said.

Meanwhile, an official told The Express Tribune that the two clerics were considered "suspicious" because they used to visit their relatives in the Sanda area of Lahore every few months. "Both are missing after they landed in Karachi airport", Swaraj tweeted.

The two clerics of Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah were found in a remote village of Sindh province with no mobile connectivity. Next day they went to see Data Darbar Dargah in Lahore. Later, they had visited Data Darbar and other Sufi shrines in and around Lahore."My aunt and her family there are as clueless as us".

The duo had entered Pakistan via Karachi on March 8. The Hindu had reported that Nazim Ali Nizami was detained in the Lahore airport on March 15 for inadequate travel papers and subsequently Syed Asif Ali Nizami was also detained, reportedly at Karachi airport.

The disappearance of the clerics is likely to add to the tensions between the two countries.

The matter has been taken up with the Pakistan government both in New Delhi as well as through the Indian mission in Islamabad, the source said.

Shortly after the call, officials of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Indian High Commission in that country that the two missing clerics had been traced, sources said. As Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar tweeted late on Friday night: "I met one of these gentlemen at the Nizamuddin dargah in Delhi past year".
