Why You Should Take a Moment to Meet Sesame Street's Newest Character

"All children with autism are different, but they do have characteristics which are common". They addressed prejudice when Gulliver wouldn't play with Snuffy because he was raised to believe that "birds only play with birds". NPR reports "Sesame Street" already has plans to feature Julia more heavily next season.

One in 66 kids in Arizona is diagnosed with autism. "A lot of times we see that autistic children or children with autism on the spectrum don't specifically, you think that they don't listen or pay attention to certain things around them".

Autism is a developmental disorder which can affect a person's ability to communicate and interact. And considering some 3.5 million people live with autism in the USA alone, there is clearly a growing need to address the topic with all of our kids. "Children with autism share in the joy of playing and loving and being friends and being part of a group".

The newest Muppet on the Sesame Street block has bright red hair and green eyes.

"It's tricky because autism is not one thing, because it is different for every single person who has autism", writer Christine Ferraro told "60 Minutes".

Julia's first episode not only focuses on her reluctance to engage with Big Bird, but also her sensitivity to loud noises and her excitability during a game.

She's the wide-eyed little Muppet with a big smile who has made it to Sesame Street. She and her husband have three other children. She was the show's first lead female muppet. "I would like her to be just Julia".

Julia's puppeteer Stacey Gordon knows this herself, as her son has autism.

"Julia has autism, but autism doesn't define who she is", Smithmyer said.

"The "Meet Julia" episode is something that I wish my son's friends had been able to see when they were small", says Ms Gordon. They might not have been anxious when he cried.

" You're beginning to introduce this person as a real person even though they are different", said Perry. The workshop is called "Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in all Children".

"Sesame Street" has used other friends of Elmo and Big Bird to tackle tough issues.
