The newest Muppet on the Sesame Street block has bright red hair and green eyes.

"It's tricky because autism is not one thing, because it is different for every single person who has autism", writer Christine Ferraro told "60 Minutes".

Julia's first episode not only focuses on her reluctance to engage with Big Bird, but also her sensitivity to loud noises and her excitability during a game.

She's the wide-eyed little Muppet with a big smile who has made it to Sesame Street. She and her husband have three other children. She was the show's first lead female muppet. "I would like her to be just Julia".

Julia's puppeteer Stacey Gordon knows this herself, as her son has autism.

"Julia has autism, but autism doesn't define who she is", Smithmyer said.

"The "Meet Julia" episode is something that I wish my son's friends had been able to see when they were small", says Ms Gordon. They might not have been anxious when he cried.

" You're beginning to introduce this person as a real person even though they are different", said Perry. The workshop is called "Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in all Children".

"Sesame Street" has used other friends of Elmo and Big Bird to tackle tough issues.
