Advocates call for more salary transparency on Equal Pay Day

But women in NY state and DE are the closest to reaching pay equity with their male counterparts, while those Wyoming appear to be the farthest: Female workers there make a mere 64 cents for every dollar earned by a man, according to the National Women's Law Center.

According to the National Women's Law Center (NWLC), today's wage gap in Missouri would cost a woman more than $400,000 over a 40-year career in comparison to a man.

Women working full-time in the state make an average of 78 cents for every dollar a man gets, adding up to a $9,000 difference each year.

OH ranks 42nd among states and D.C. for gender wage inequity, and two state lawmakers are hoping new legislation amplifies conversations about closing the pay gap.

While the pay gap is extreme when comparing women to men, the numbers are excruciatingly painful for Black women, who at best make 69 percent of what white men earn.

Equal Pay Day is a day that draws attention to disparities in pay between men and women who perform the same job.

Young Women's Trust Chief Executive, Dr Carole Easton OBE, said: "Gender pay gap reporting is a great step forward but does not go far enough to close the gap". Where hopefully soon we will be celebrating women being paid the same as men for the same work.

To raise awareness of the pay gap and how reducing it can improve the economy and quality of life, is creating a one-day campaign called #20percentcounts.

"Women are 51 percent of the population in the US now, and yet when it comes to the Legislature, there's another example of where it's really disproportionate", she explained.

Unfortunately, the 2016 Latina Women Equal Pay Day wasn't until November 1.

Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. "The gaps are so large for Latina workers because they are disproportionately concentrated in lower paying occupations in the service and logistics sectors".

When women of color are taken into consideration, the pay gap increases significantly. The program has trained more than 3,000 working women since then, according to the mayor's office, and hopes to train 8,500 by December 2017 and 85,000 women by 2020.

Women make up almost half our workforce.
