Alonso embracing challenges of his 'Indy 500 adventure'

Alonso embracing challenges of his 'Indy 500 adventure'

The Spaniard will attempt to run the Indianapolis 500 next month, and hopefully, some day, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

That's why the internationally known F1 star has chose to skip the Monaco Grand Prix, cross the Atlantic Ocean and compete in the Indianapolis 500.

Maybe that's why Indy is so appealing at this stage of his successful career.

Alonso is in the USA this weekend spending time with his new Andretti Autosport team-mates as he prepares for the May 28 race.

"I'm very open. If I want to to be the most complete driver in the world or the best driver in the world, then I want to experience all the different cars and different driving techniques, and I need to adapt and grow up as a driver". I'm sure I'm going to hear "Do whatever you want, man" from F1 fans regarding futile situations for years to come.

The former Ferrari driver will miss this year's Monaco Grand Prix to compete at the Indy 500 and is set to be joined by a former Formula One rival in Juan Pablo Montoya. Team and IndyCar executives believe the Formula One-to-Indy move by such an accomplished driver is a win for all sides, bringing exposure across the ocean in both directions. "But I think the situation with the auto [in F1] is hard and he wants to try something else". "I think it's going to be a fantastic thing".

Only one driver has achieved the feat, two-time Formula One champion Graham Hill. "Stoffel is new he's got a lot to learn and he's got long term commitment and support from McLaren so he can honestly wait a bit", Boullier said.

Alonso will have some homework to do before racing in the Indy 500. Alonso triumphed in 2006 and 2007 at Monaco.

So with a pair of Monaco championships in the bank, it's on to Indy.

"So what happens in 2018, we'll have to wait and see, because obviously we're working very hard to get Fernando and Stoffel Vandoorne a much more competitive vehicle than we are producing right now". "But with time and with experience, with 16 years in Formula One ... your values change". Stefan Wilson gave up his ride to accommodate Alonso, and Brown called him "the unsung hero in this whole process". He will make his Verizon IndyCar Series debut in a Dallara-Honda auto entered by McLaren and prepared by reigning race champions Andretti Autosport. Alonso will be on hand for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama.

Brown said: "Everyone in pit lane who has a seat available would want to talk to him". "It's a different world".

"I think the good thing - with a full day of testing - he will get a bit of an idea of what he needs".

Alonso is a two-time victor at the Circuit de Monaco but will miss this year's Monaco GP, the showpiece event on the Formula 1 calendar, to race in Indianapolis. Alonso said while it's comforting to know Andretti has been through a process like this before with a rookie - who was famously clueless about Indy cars - Rossi's victory might have given the world the wrong impression about how tough it is to win the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing".
