Astronaut breaks record for most time in space by American

On April 24, Peggy Whitson marked 534 days, two hours, and 49 cumulative minutes in space, earning her the record for longest time spent off the planet for a US astronaut, Fortune reports. By the time she returns to Earth, she will have spent more than 650 cumulative days in space.

Trump, flanked by NASA astronaut Kate Rubins and his daughter Ivanka, was speaking from the Oval Office to Whitson and Colonel Jack Fischer about the conditions in space. And at 57, she is also the oldest female astronaut in space. "So it's a very exciting time to be at NASA".

President Trump on Monday turned his attention to outer space - speaking with the astronaut who broke the U.S. record for the longest stint in orbit and predicting that humans would visit Mars during his second term.

In addition to spending 535 consecutive days in space, Whitson became the first woman commander of the International Space Station in 2008.

"It's actually a huge honor to break a record like this", Whitson responded.

President Trump had joked that he'd like to get astronauts to Mars by the end of his first term.

Whitson told Trump that she was "excited about the missions to Mars in the 2030s".

NASA has not launched an astronaut into space without the help of the Russians for the last five years, forcing the pay Russia $71 million dollars per astronaut lifted to the ISS.

This is Whitson's third long duration trip aboard the International Space Station.

After hearing about an experiment on board that converts urine to water, and that the astronauts had drunk it and said it wasn't as bad as it sounded, Trump quipped, "Well, that's good".

The debut of the mega rocket is still more than a year away-at least.

Whitson has clocked in 534 days over three expeditions to the International Space Station (ISS).

Trump then asked what we're learning by being in space. "I've been dealing with politicians so much, I'm so much more impressed with these people, you have no idea". It was Donald Trump.
