Canada introduces bill to legalize marijuana

“Youth already think marijuana is harmless, and now we are giving them the governments seal of approval.

Trudeau has repeatedly said, as he did in Parliament this week, that it is easier for a teenager to buy a marijuana cigarette than a bottle of beer, "and that is not right".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is trying to change the maple leaf at the center of his nation's flag into a pot leaf.

Though some find the bill drastic, a government news release promises a "strict legal framework for the production, sale, distribution and possession of marijuana". I also know from 40 years of police work, that this is the business overwhelmingly controlled by organized crime and the profits of this criminal enterprise do no good for our communities. In B.C., the current underground cannabis market is worth an estimated $7 billion annually. The marijuana task force led by former Liberal justice minister Anne McLellan had acknowledged provinces and territories would likely harmonize it with the age limit they now have in place for alcohol and tobacco.

If all this sound like a hassle and you just want to stay home, you could grow your own pot - each household will be allowed up to four plants, not to be taller than one metre in height. The proposed legislation will be carefully scrutinized by provincial governments, marijuana producers and a number of would-be distributors and sellers of marijuana that are all looking for a piece of the multibillion-dollar market.

Chief Murray Rodd issued a statement to The Examiner after details of the new bills were made public Thursday.

The minimum age for recreational use of marijuana has been set at 18, but provinces can decide to set a higher minimum age, as some now do in the case of alcohol.

But the federal task force recommended marijuana not be sold with alcohol.

One leading marijuana activist said she doubts the new legislation will result in a full-fledged tourism industry springing up around pot in Canada. "It's not an absolute guarantee that kids won't get access to it, but it will be far more hard for kids to get access to it when this new regime is in place than it is today". “This piece of legislation puts the Canadian family at risk, ” said Pamela McColl of Smart Approaches to Marijuana Canada, and anti-legalization group.

But Larsen said there is no direct correlation between blood THC levels and whether or not you are impaired for driving.

Bringing marijuana across borders would remain a serious criminal offense - especially as marijuana laws differ depending on countries.

"This must be an orderly transition, it's not a free-for-all", said Goodale.

"The laws of the United States are the responsibilities of the United States".

The news that Canada was soon going to announce the law was noticed online last month by Snoop Dogg, who tweeted "Oh Canada!"
