Canucks fire Desjardins after finishing last

Canucks fire Desjardins after finishing last

"We made a very hard decision to relieve Willie Desjardins of his duties as head coach today", said Canucks GM Jim Benning.

Willie Desjardins was sacked by Vancouver on Monday after missing the postseason for the second consecutive season.

The Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Willie Desjardins.

A news conference is scheduled for Monday afternoon. "Willie's a competitor and he thinks about one thing and that's winning". "We're going to be young and young players make mistakes". The 60-year-old led the club to the playoffs as a rookie National Hockey League head coach in 2014-15, but the Canucks took a big step backward last season and then finished 29th out of 30 teams in the National Hockey League standings this season.

"A 3-0 loss to the Arizona Coyotes on January 26 where Vancouver didn't register a shot until just before the midway point of the second period started a downward spiral that would see the club go an NHL-worst 7-23-3 over its final 33 games â€" a 42-point pace over 82 games.

The Saskatchewan native was with the Vancouver Canucks for three seasons, going 109-110-27 in that span which isn't that bad given the teams he had.

Today, the Canucks do not have a single top-three forward in their entire organization, but only a handful of names they can point to as potential first-liners. Vancouver was 0-9-3 in their final 12 games at Rogers Arena, breaking the franchise record for their longest winless streak at home of 11 games (10 losses, one tie) set in 1970-71.

The Vancouver Canucks are trying to jumpstart their stalled rebuild with a new head coach.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin will finish their careers as Canucks, and 30-year-old defenceman Alex Edler, so comfortable and deeply rooted in Vancouver, is probably immovable with his no-trade clause.

Last year, the team posted a 31-38-13 record.

Vancouver was already in the process of dismantling its aging core when Desjardins took over.

The plan didn't come close to providing the desired results, and Desjardins was eventually the one to pay the price. It's a challenging day for us. "We're grateful to Willie, Doug, Perry and each of their families for their dedication and hard work and wish them every success".
