Corbyn kicks off United Kingdom election campaign, vowing to overturn 'rigged system'

Theresa May has won backing of MPs for her decision to hold a general election on June 8, but her decision to hold early snap elections shocked everyone in Britain.

Having repeatedly ruled out calling a snap election in the past, Mrs May said she had "reluctantly" taken the decision to go to the country after seeing other parties "playing games" with the process of preparing for Brexit negotiations.

The hotly contested "Brexit" referendum ended with the resignation of then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

May surprised allies and opponents on Tuesday when she announced her plan to bring forward an election that was not due until 2020, saying she needed to avoid a clash of priorities in the sensitive final stages of the two-year Brexit talks.

A European Commission spokesman said the real political negotiations on Brexit would start after the election.

May, Britain's second woman prime minister, also has strong popular support for her handling of the political natural disaster unleashed by Brexit.

May's Conservative Party holds a slim majority in Parliament's lower House of Commons and May is banking on gaining a greater share of the seats to make Brexit a smoother transition for her government. More important still, such is the worsening worldwide geo-political crisis that nothing can be predicted with any certainty, including a British election result.

May told The Sun newspaper that if Britain was still negotiating with the bloc in the run-up to a national election, "the Europeans might have seen that as a time of weakness when they could push us".

"Make no mistake, if the SNP wins this election in Scotland - and the Tories don't -- then Theresa May's attempt to block our mandate to hold another referendum when the time is right, will crumble to dust", SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

Britain now has two years to negotiate the terms of the divorce before it comes into effect in late March 2019.

"In the base case, the United Kingdom government would have the parliamentary majority to push through hard decisions to seal a deal", they said.

British Pakistani parliamentarians said that Theresa May has attempted to tighten her grip on power, while taking taking U-turns like Pakistani politicians. Then Cameron, who favored remaining in the European Union, lost his referendum bet previous year, resulting in a reversal of four decades of European integration and creating extreme uncertainty over Britain's future economic ties to its closest partners.

It's this prospect of a so-called "hard Brexit" that has mainly anxious businesses in Britain, many of which trade intensely with the European Union, the biggest destination for British exports.

The pro-Labour New Statesmen ratcheted up the pressure on Corbyn Tuesday, with columnist Sarah Ditum, a Guardian journalist, urging party members to only campaign for anti-leadership MPs, and declaring, "In the most serious possible way, it is morally intolerable to imagine Corbyn as Prime Minister". Tajani's comments appear to reflect concern that concluding the negotiations so close to a national vote would have forced May to seek a more hardline Brexit settlement in order to please core Conservative voters.
