Delta trying to catch up on days of flight delays

Storms that hit the Southeast earlier this week have continued to wreak havoc on air travel Saturday, with Delta Air Lines canceling nearly 300 more flights at its Atlanta hub.

Delta Chief Operating Officer Gil West called the storms that pounded Atlanta "unprecedented" and acknowledged the recovery effort could have been better. "We, as always, learn from these experiences".

Delta Air Lines is still struggling to recover after severe weather caused the airline to cancel thousands of flights, leaving passengers- including many spring break and holiday travelers- stranded. That compared with 207 cancellations by rival American Airlines Group Inc., the website found.

Flights to and from Atlanta and Detroit have the highest count of delays and cancellations, Tampa airport officials said. The company said today that crews were still working around the clock to restore normal service.

Last Wednesday, severe weather affected the airline's hub in Atlanta where about 60 percent of its planes pass through each day.

"When Delta doesn't fly aircraft, not only do customers not get to their destination, but flight crews don't get to where they are scheduled to be". As of Sunday morning, one flight was canceled out of LAX and two flights won't make it to the airport due to the ongoing airline issue.

The thunder storm hit Wednesday, but canceled flights and long lines in Atlanta persisted into Friday.

"There's a ground hold at (New York's) LaGuardia so they may pull us off this plane", Goldklang told CNN from aboard a flight, her fourth attempt to get out of Savannah Friday evening. When this happens, unfortunately, further delays and cancellations result'.
