Democrat dismisses North Korea briefing as a 'photo op'

The Pacific commander said that he was taking Kim Jong Un at his word that the North Korean leader is determined to develop a long-range nuclear missile that could strike the U.S. and that should "provide us all a sense of urgency" to ensure USA forces in the Pacific are prepared.

Tensions have spiked in recent weeks with missile launches from the nuclear-armed North and strong rhetoric from US President Donald Trump's administration.

China, which has grown increasingly frustrated with North Korea, its ally, and Russian Federation see the system's powerful radars as a security threat.

Footage of what appeared to be a new intermediate-range ballistic missile being fired and the missile crossing the Pacific and hitting an unidentified city in the USA was shown on a giant screen at a performance hall, according to the state-run TV station. An official from Seoul's Defense Ministry couldn't confirm those specific details.

North Korea's official media said early Wednesday that leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the exercises.

North Korea's nuclear and missile threat is perhaps the most serious security challenge confronting U.S. President Donald Trump. Chinese President Xi Jinping, who spoke to Trump on Monday, is urging restraint from both Pyongyang and Washington.

South Korean Defence Ministry predictions that the North would mark its armed forces day with a "strategic provocation" - a nuclear or ballistic missile test - proved premature.

North Korea has also been irked by what it sees as an act of aggression and has fired back literally and verbally. "People put blindfolds on for decades, and now it's time to solve the problem", Trump said.

The Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Michigan (SSGN 727) arrives in Busan for a regularly scheduled port visit while conducting routine patrols throughout the Western Pacific.

"It is a wild dream for the U.S.to think of depriving the DPRK of its nuclear deterrent through military threat and sanctions".

Harris also said the Pentagon should weigh whether to install missile interceptors on Hawaii, which could be one of the first parts of the United States in range of an improved North Korean missile, in addition to existing interceptors in California and Alaska.

The North has so far conducted five confirmed nuclear tests and numerous missile test-launches, and it is believed to be preparing for a sixth nuclear weapons test. While stating that he thought Trump's approach was appropriate, he added that a resolution would require "persistent engaged allocation of diplomatic and military resources and effort".

Meanwhile, several news outlets reported that the U.S.is considering putting North Korea on its state sponsors of terrorism list, citing a senior White House official.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and diplomats from the council's 15 members will join the meeting.
