IRS to use debt agencies this month

IRS to use debt agencies this month

Like the IRS, the Better Business Bureau is concerned this change might give scammers new ways to trick people. "In reality, those taxpayers whose accounts are assigned as part of the private collection effort know they have a tax debt".

Read the IRS announcement to find out more about the program, and visit the IRS website for more on tax scams.

An official with the Department of Revenue said they've been using private agencies for about 15 years and only taxpayers who flat-out don't respond to multiple bills are turned over to an outside company.

Second, the BBB states, debt collectors are prohibited by federal law from harassing citizens.

The agencies won't use robocalls to contact taxpayers, the IRS told NBC News, and they must follow the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Payments will not be made over the phone by credit card or any other means, such as direct wiring or credit card purchases.

MA uses private collection agencies to go after delinquent taxpayers. All debt payments are made directly to the IRS, not the collection agencies themselves. Accounts that will not be sent to private collection agencies include taxpayers who are: deceased, under the age of 18, military members in designated combat zones, victims of tax-related identity theft, now under examination or audit, now in a payment plan, classified as an innocent spouse and those in presidentially declared disaster areas.

If your case ends up being farmed out to a private collection firm, the IRS will provide you with its name and contact information.

The IRS often attempts to set up payment plans and allow for appeals when working with delinquent taxpayers. If you are unsure or suspicious of a call, take the time to verify.
