Jammu and Kashmir: Universities, colleges, schools to re-open today

"Talks can not happen amid stone pelting and firing of bullets", she told reporters after a 20-minute meeting with the Prime Minister.

A police spokesperson later said that there was no aerial firing during the protests.

State Education Minister Altaf Bukhari told The Indian Express that outsiders had mingled with the students, leading to clashes with the police. The police said that among its injured officers and men are SSP Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail Parray, SP East (Srinagar) Sheikh Faisal and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kothibagh, Imran Farooq. Students and some police personnel sustained injuries in the clashes.

Students of many of these institutions held protest demonstrations last Monday and clashed with the security forces, leaving several dozen students injured. "We have reports that some teachers at the colleges had pleaded with the students not to engage in clashes but their answer was that they wanted nothing short of martyrdom", he said. As the protests grew stronger along MA Road and protesters tried to March towards Lal Chowk, police swung into action and sprinkled colour water and teargas shells against the protesting students. The school had just been reopened after it was closed for a week following similar student protests.

Valley girls have been increasingly following in the footsteps of the boys in participating in anti-India protests, and some of them have been injured in clashes.

Jammu and Kashmir: Universities, colleges, schools to re-open today

A statement issued by the police in the evening said that the students were attending classes normally at Sri Pratap Hr. Sec. The miscreants along with some students blocked MA road because of which hundreds of vehicles got stranded on this ever busy road and adjacent chowks. The police resorted to tear smoke shells, chilly and PAVA shells to disperse them. "The parents are requested to advise their wards not to indulge in stone pelting and other such activities which create disorder in the schools and on the roads", the police said. At least eight civilians were killed and dozens wounded on the fateful day when government forces opened fire on unarmed protesters in various areas of the constituency spanning over Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts, which witnessed an aggregate voting of mere 7 per cent.

Whatever happens in the Valley, security forces drag us out and beat us up.

"The mob was dispersed and the normalcy was restored in the area".

Meanwhile, Iqra Sadiq told the media that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met her in the hospital and assured her of all help, including a government job-she said she only wants the CM to book the culprit who is responsible for her present condition. Authorities responded by closing colleges, universities and some high schools, but the protests have continued.

The April 20 demonstration was also in protest of the police raid on the college in Pulwama.
