Kenyans have a banner day at the Boston Marathon

Meb Keflezighi, the California resident who won the Boston Marathon the year after the bombings, took time near the finish line today to greet the family of Martin Richard.

Buzunesh Deba will leave the Boston Marathon with one champion's medal this week. But for those outside the running world, her name may not sound so familiar. She and Gibb helped make room for other women to join them. Cheerleaders cheer for other people. He was the first American man to win in Boston in three decades. Roberta Gibb ran the race unofficially an hour faster.

He told the Boston Herald he might return as an amateur.

Jeptoo, whose 2006 and 2013 victories remain unchallenged, claimed $150,000 for the victory and an additional $25,000 for setting a course record. "I'm very happy for winning Boston". I grinned through the gloom and flakes. The Boston Marathon will retire number 261 in Switzer's honor after she runs the race on Monday with supporters from around the world.

The pair practiced together and when Switzer sailed past the finish line of a 26-mile run easily and chose to tack on an extra five miles for good measure, she proved to her coach she was ready. The straight-line Boston course doesn't qualify for world records because of the possibility of a supportive tailwind like the one on Monday.

Manuela Schar of Switzerland finished in an unofficial 1 hour, 28 minutes, 17 seconds to win the women's wheelchair race on Monday.

When the race began, Kathrine felt welcome. "And it's awesome to see American distance running on the upswing and being competitive in these races".

"She knows herself she is not champion", Beyi said.

And 50 years on, she's back - wearing the same number that an official tried to rip off her top during that first race.

Kirui waved and smiled as he took the tape in a time of 2hr 9min 37sec, with Rupp finishing in second.

"When I was running, my body was feeling good, Kiplagat says to the Associated Press". She went on to finish the race in 4:20:02. "We have the podium for both men and women, so the future is great". She last ran in the Boston Marathon in 1976. In her memoir, Switzer recalled the Syracuse coach telling her the 26-mile marathon was too long for a "fragile woman". I was serious about my running and I could not let fear stop me'. Her courage proved that nothing is impossible and that all barriers are worth breaking down.
