Manchester United defenders Jones and Smalling facing lengthy injury absence

Manchester United defenders Jones and Smalling facing lengthy injury absence

'I never leave a job unfinished, ' Ibrahimovic said.

As we stated earlier, Manchester United fans got that familiar sense of deja vu at Old Trafford this afternoon West Brom picked up a battling point against Mourinho's men.

On top of Jones and Smalling's absence, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera miss this weekend's match through suspension and a hamstring issue also rules Paul Pogba out.

Manchester United can't move into the top four with a win, but three points will be essential if they want to keep pace with fourth-place Liverpool.

Smalling also suffered a knee injury while away with the England squad during the worldwide break and Mourinho concedes the defensive pair aren't expected back any time soon. The only possible silver lining for the United faithful is that skipper Wayne Rooney has a chance to stake his claim for a starting berth in the wake of their injury-crisis in midfield.

Ultimately though, Mourinho will be desperately disappointed to see how things have gone over the last fortnight after bemoaning the fixture list last month.

Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all had opportunities for United but failed to take them, with Rashford twice frustrated by visiting goalkeeper Ben Foster.

"They are long-term injuries", Mourinho said of Smalling and Jones, his two central defenders.

Mourinho says he is not interested in individuals with such concerns. Before, we play Anderlecht and after, we play Anderlecht. You know that we have also Pogba injured. Chelsea are on holidays.

"In 15 days' time maybe the Premier League is not important for us, maybe it is". As long as Jose Mourinho can keep his team focused, though, this is going to be a very hard match for West Bromwich to get an upset.

"And then we have four creative players that we need to score a goal and they didn't".

"So we want every match to be important until the end of the season and if we manage that, to be in the run in the two competitions, the boys have to be very resilient, very strong mentally".
