Mark Reckless announces defection back from Ukip to Tories

Mark Reckless announces defection back from Ukip to Tories

Mark Reckless has announced that he is leaving UKIP to join the Conservative group in the Welsh Assembly.

Reckless became the party's second MP in 2014 after he defected from the Tories and refought his Rochester and Strood seat for Ukip.

But in May 2015 Reckless lost his seat to Tory candidate Kelly Tolhurst.

Instead, Mr Reckless claimed that he joined the Conservative Group to secure "greater influence" for his Welsh Assembly Meeting constituents.

Announcing his latest change of course, Mr Reckless praised Theresa May for her "exemplary" leadership since becoming prime minister.

He was elected to the Assembly in May 2016 as UKIP won their first seats in Cardiff Bay, and he is now chairman of the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee. In Wales, the Conservatives are the main opposition to Labour.

"We believed Mark Reckless once was, he's decided that it's better for him to move away which is regrettable to say the least".

He is alleged to have applied to re-join the Conservatives and sit alongside them in the Assembly, but sources suggest he will be formally prevented from doing so.

Mr Oakden said the party was "disappointed" by his defection.

"I'm delighted I've made the Conservatives the official opposition in Wales and we want to support Theresa May and the UK Government with what they're doing".

In a letter to Mr Davies, the assembly presiding officer Elin Jones said, as Mr Reckless was no longer a member of Ukip, that he "can be treated as a member of your group for the purposes of our procedures within the Assembly".

A year ago he was elected as an assembly member for South Wales East for UKIP.

Mr Reckless then stood for the party at the Welsh Assembly election.

Carswell remains the Clacton MP, but now sits as an independent, having left Ukip last month after falling out with other senior members, including Farage, the former leader.

"Letting the next person on the Ukip list fill that vacancy".

But despite rumours that Mr Reckless would be rejoining the Conservative Party, it seems that this is not the case.

"It is now incumbent on Mark Reckless to relinquish a position he has only by virtue of a Ukip mandate".
