NFL Draft 2017: 49ers pck Stanford DE Solomon Thomas

Thomas had eight sacks last season.

Thomas was the first Stanford defensive player to go in the first round since Darrien Gordon in 1993 and the first defensive lineman since Greg Sampson in 1972.

The San Francisco 49ers moved down one spot in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and still selected the player that they likely planned to take all along.

For moving down one spot, San Francisco picked up third- and fourth-round picks in this draft and a 2018 third-rouder. The Bears moved up to the No. 2 slot and grabbed junior quarterback Mitchell Trubisky of North Carolina. The year before, they selected Arik Armstead - also out of OR - with the 17th overall selection. It is unclear exactly where Thomas will play in the 49ers' new 4-3 system, but expect him to lineup both on the inside and outside as he did in college. On tape, Thomas is a dominant run defender who wins with an uncommon blend of power, speed, and quickness on the interior. Thomas will help a 49ers defense that allowed the most rushing yards to opposing teams in 2016. He has spent time around the program in recent years and even took a class on decision-making with Thomas where they collaborated on a project. Their next scheduled pick comes Friday with the second selection of the second round, No. 34 overall.
