O'Reilly apologizes for jest about Maxine Waters' hair

Following Waters' comments O'Reilly responded by mocking her, saying afterward he did not hear a word of what Waters said because he was distracted by "the James Brown wig". Maxine Waters said in a clip shown on Fox & Friends because he was looking at her "James Brown wig". O'Reilly took a swipe at California's Rep. Maxine Waters' hair, calling it a "James Brown wig with many calling for his firing".

During a segment of Fox & Friends, a clip of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif) speaking out against attacks committed by Trump supporters played. As president of the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America, Carusone said in a statement, "Bill O'Reilly's apology ain't s-t. And let us get on with discussing the real issues of the country".

Brian Kilmeade, one of the program's male co-hosts, laughed wholeheartedly at O'Reilly's comment, but Ainsley Earhardt, the lone female host, spoke up in Waters defense saying "I have to defend her on that". She sees herself as a "strong black woman".

O'Reilly said that he agreed that she was attractive, saying: "I didn't say she wasn't attractive".

On his show, The O'Reilly Factor, O'Reilly also apologized for the comment.

She said that African Americans have fought for justice in the country, and that's what they're doing now under the Trump administration. And so, I'm not going to be put down, I'm not going to go anywhere. "If you look at all the educational statistics, how are you going to get jobs for people who aren't qualified for jobs?"

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly is not known for his tact or sensitivity, or for being particularly kind to women or people of color.

"I love her. Maxine Waters should have her own sitcom", O'Reilly clowned.

In an email sent to Washington Post by Fox News, O'Reilly said he is sorry for the bad and silly joke.

Waters has not replied directly, but sent a powerful message from her Twitter account. Then she made mention of the numerous sexual harassment lawsuits O'Reilly and former Fox News head Roger Ailes have settled out of court.
