Tennessee teacher suspected in kidnapping arrested in northern California

Tennessee teacher suspected in kidnapping arrested in northern California

"She didn't act like a rescued person would act", showing no signs of elation, he said.

Elizabeth is picked up by a friend in Culleoka, Tenn., at about 7:30 a.m. and gets dropped off at a Shoney's restaurant in Columbia. The images showed Cummins had altered his hair to appear darker and the girl's hair may have changed to red. The two were subjects of an Amber Alert since March 14.

Security camera footage from an Oklahoma City WalMart conclusively placed the pair in that location.

Channel 4 spoke with Elizabeth Thomas' father, Anthony Thomas, as he stopped by his attorney's office in Columbia shortly after learning she had been found safe. He added that when Thomas wanted to share something she would whisper stuff in Cummins ear and then Cummins would repeat it.

The TBI credits the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Maury County Sheriff's Department and the Office of 22nd District Attorney General Brent Cooper for their assistance in the search.

Cooper said Cummins "planned this in such a way that he had a 24-hour head start. easily enough time for him to make it to Mexico".

Wife Jill, who has filed for divorce from her husband, and daughters, Erica and Ashlee, also indicated in the statement they are "glad this chapter of the ordeal is over" and thanked all the law enforcement involved in the case.

The girl is being evaluated and treated by mental health experts specializing in trauma, lawyer Jason Whatley said in a press release.

A TBI plane is supposed to fly the girl back home.

"That is the the guy", Barry told the paper.

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey, right, speaks during a press conference in Yreka, Calif., Thursday, April 20, 2017. Thomas was recovered safely in a remote area of Northern California, following a massive nationwide manhunt for the pair. Barry said Cummins used a fake name and said they had lost everything in a fire in Colorado and needed a place to stay.

"She was kind of shy or timid or something", Barry said.

"The girl wasn't really looking at me or anything and he was always dominating the conversation".

After realizing who they were, Barry said he immediately called 911.

"I had a photo of him that was the Amber Alert and I was like, that's definitely the guy, and then we saw the auto as well and it matched up", he added.

"When my neighbor called and told me, I thought 'Oh my God, no, we are way too far from (Tennessee),' " O'Hare said.

After investigators located a Nissan Rogue, they were able to confirm through its vehicle identification number that it belonged to Cummins.

Elizabeth Thomas disappeared from Maury County with 50-year-old Tad Cummins on March 13. Siskiyou County deputies formed a perimeter around the 12-by-12-foot cabin for several hours that night before drawing Cummins out the next morning to arrest him. He was subsequently placed under arrest.

The TBI earlier had said the two were found in a commune, but later backed off that description. Snipers surrounded the cabin as Cummins exited the cabin and was taken into custody. The father says he is going to have to figure out what sort of state of mind his daughter is in and that it may be a long road to recovery. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department told ABC News that Cummins would be arraigned Friday. He is awaiting extradition to Tennessee, where he will be charged with sexual contact with a minor and aggravated kidnapping.

A federal criminal complaint charging Cummins with transporting a minor across state lines for sex says the two "are involved in a sexual relationship and traveled in interstate commerce to continue their relationship and to engage in unlawful sexual activity".

He could get a minimum of 10 years in the slammer on the federal charges alone. The charges are pending review by Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus.

In the days before he allegedly abducted his 15-year-old student, Tennessee teacher Tad Cummins refilled a prescription for Cialis, took out a loan for quick cash and made hotel reservations in another state, actions investigators believe show he was planning to leave with the girl.

Tad Cummins was expected to be in the Siskiyou Superior Court on Friday, but early Friday morning Federal Bureau of Investigation agents took custody of Cummins and transported him to Sacramento.
