Thousands at Auschwitz for yearly Holocaust memorial event

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin attends a ceremony at Yad Vashem Holocaust museum as Israel marks the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 24, 2017.

In a video message for the opening of the World Jewish Congress plenary assembly in New York, President Trump pledged to stand firm against hatred of Jews and terrorism: "We must stamp out prejudice and anti-Semitism everywhere it is found".

The Trump administration came under fire in January for its statement marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day that omitted a specific mention of Jews.

"Your stories remind us that we must never ever shrink away from telling the truth about evil in our time", Trump told the survivors.

At the opening ceremony on Sunday night, Netanyahu spoke about what he said was the world's indifference to the genocide of the Jews in the Second World War and how Israel is the guarantee the Jewish people will never be that weak again.

President Trump's Holocaust remembrance remarks are very similar to the Holocaust Museum Website's "Introduction to the Holocaust" page.

Earlier this month, White House press secretary Sean Spicer apologized for saying that Adolf Hitler did not use chemical weapons in a discussion of Syrian leader Bashar Assad and calling Nazi concentration camps "Holocaust centers".

"We've seen anti-Semitism on university campuses, in the public square and in threats against Jewish citizens", Trump said.

In February, when asked by a Jewish reporter to address the rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S., Trump went on the defensive, accusing the reporter of asking an "insulting question".

The President said the US will "stamp out hatred" - despite the accusations facing him and members of his White House staff.

The White House's statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day was just one example of its haphazard response to anti-Semitism, not helped by the fact that prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer praised the statement as "especially Trumpian" and lauded its "de-Judification" of the Holocaust.

The remark, which Mr Spicer had made days after a chemical attack in Syria killed scores of civilians, ignored Hitler's use of gas chambers to kill Jews.

On this day, we also honor the survivors and those who fought against this unspeakable, malevolent mass crime.

Trump also promised to combat anti-Semitism and bigotry, as he has repeatedly since a wave of bomb threats hit Jewish institutions nationwide.
