Tillerson meets Russia's Lavrov after war of words over Syria

Just a few weeks ago, Tillerson's trip was seen as a test of Trump's commitment to developing a better relationship with Moscow.

We recall that back in 2013, there was another chemical attack on a Damascus suburb that killed many more people than the one near Idlib.

The Russian president added that the Western response to Khan Sheikhoun reminded him of 2003, "when USA envoys to the UN Security Council were demonstrating what they said were chemical weapons found in Iraq". If the USA attacks Syria and hits the wrong targets, killing civilians, there will be worldwide hell to pay.

Tillerson is due to meet Wednesday morning with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Mattis said the National Security Council considered the near-century-old global prohibition against the use of chemical weapons, the Syrian regime's repeated violations of that worldwide law, and the inexplicably ruthless murders the regime had committed. "And our hope is Bashar al-Assad will not be a part of that future".

Current and former intelligence officials from both Republican and Democratic administrations have said they do not believe Rice's actions were unusual or illegal. But since then he has emerged as one of the Trump administration's strongest Russian Federation critics.

Any hope in Russian Federation that the Trump administration would herald less confrontational relations has been dashed in the past week after the new US leader fired missiles at Syria to punish Moscow's ally for its suspected use of poison gas.

Senior administration officials "suggested that the attack may have been motivated by rebel gains in the surrounding area, as rebel forces approached a strategic Syrian air base", NPR's Scott Horsley reports.

However, the BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says President Assad is Russia's key military ally in the Middle East and Mr Tillerson may need to rethink his belief that he can weaken Moscow's support for him.

The Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, said that Russia's veto had put it "on the wrong side of the argument". Putin quickly invited the Syrian and Iranian foreign ministers to Moscow on Friday, the day after Tillerson departs.

Still, Washington is sending mixed signals on how it plans to deal with Syria.

The assessment in the document and sharp words from the White House were the latest in a remarkable turn for the Trump administration, which took office hoping to find common ground with Russian Federation, especially when it came to fighting the Islamic State terrorist network.

As the council debated its response on Thursday, the United States fired cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase that the USA says was used to launch the chemical attack.

It has also led the Trump administration to harden its attitude against Assad weeks after top US officials said they were more concerned with defeating Islamic State militants than getting Assad out of power. "It was not a harbinger of some change in our military campaign". Russian Federation has never publicly acknowledged any such attack by Assad's forces and has tried for the past 18 months to help him expand his authority in Syria.

So what can Tillerson achieve in Moscow?

"The United Kingdom therefore shares the USA assessment that it is highly likely that the regime was responsible for a sarin attack on Khan Sheikhoun on April 4", Mr Rycroft said.

Mattis suggested the United States did not have firm evidence that Russian Federation had foreknowledge or was complicit in the chemical attack. Within minutes, images began appearing on social media depicting victims, many of them children, shivering and gasping for air. He can order more military action, with the danger of an escalating America involvement in a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people. Washington warned Moscow, and Russian troops at the base were not hit. Read the original article.
