US VP Pence warns North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'

US VP Pence warns North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'

"Those who challenge our resolve and our readiness should know we will defeat any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response", he said yesterday on board the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier.

The New York Times reported last month that President Donald Trump inherited a cyberwar on North Korea in the hope of sabotaging its missile tests.

He called North Korea the most urgent and unsafe threat to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region.

Speculation that the U.S. may have used cyber capabilities to thwart the North Korean missile test comes at a time of escalating rhetoric between the two nations.

Pointing to the quarter-century since the United States first confronted North Korea over its attempts to build nuclear weapons, the vice president said a period of patience had followed.

According to Pence, U.S. President Trump was confident that even without military pressure, diplomatic and economic pressures could convince the North Korean regime to cooperate in dismantling its nuclear program.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Pence also emphasized that the USA would uphold freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea - where China's actions in support of its disputed territorial claims have sparked tensions in recent years.

The U.S. -Japan alliance is the cornerstone of peace, prosperity and freedom in the Asia-Pacific region, Vice President Mike Pence told U.S. service members aboard the USS Ronald Reagan at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan, home of the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet today.

"The U.S. will strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific".

Pence also spoke to Japanese business leaders at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo and assured them that the Trump administration's plans for a tax overhaul and to cut regulations will help businesses in the Pacific, too.

Speaking to USA and Japanese troops on board the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier Wednesday, he called North Korea the most urgent and unsafe threat to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region.

"As the situation regarding North Korea is getting increasingly severe, your visit is very timely". The event is often used as an opportunity to test new weaponry.

"We are with you 100 per cent", he told the premier.

The Bush administration tried to get them to the negotiating table during the Six Party talks, and the punishing sanctions levied under the Obama administration haven't deterred Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

In a perplexing mix-up, the USS Carl Vinson, which the US Navy said on April 8 would head to North Korea, was photographed 3,500 miles away in Indonesia on April 15.

"The point the President was making is that we're ready". The US has dismissed this, saying that planned, regularly occurring military exercises that have gone on for 40 years without leading to war can't be equated to a state that often threatens to nuke its neighbors.
