8 shot during San Diego pool party; suspect dead

Seven people were shot, one fatally, when a gunman who witnesses said never left his poolside chair opened fire on a birthday party in an upscale apartment complex in San Diego late Sunday.

Police chief Shelley Zimmerman said there was "zero information to indicate race played a factor in this awful and horrific crime", The Los Angeles Times reports.

Gabrielle Sulli, who lives at the apartment complex, told KGTV she heard "people screaming" and said "there is a insane guy that is shooting, we made a decision to run ... we literally saw people jumping out from the fences and running away like insane".

Zimmerman said all six of those wounded are expected to survive. Selis, a 49-year-old former auto mechanic at a San Diego Ford dealership, was white.

"I don't think it's rocket science", said Benjamin, the president of UC San Diego's National Society of Black Engineers. During a press conference with city officials, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer praised police and first responders for their efforts and suggested responding officers "precluded further bloodshed". It was a "spontaneous act of violence" and the victims were shot because they were nearby, not due to their skin color, she said.

When police officers arrived on scene they were directed to the pool area where they located the suspect who then pointed and fired his weapon at the officers, according to Police Chief Zimmerman. "It is apparent that Selis wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen in".

The KFMB eyewitness, who identified himself only as a Crossroads resident named John, said he saw the suspect "sitting, drinking a beer in one hand with a gun out in the other" in the pool area of the apartment complex.

Selis, a service technician at a Ford vehicle dealership, appeared to have had financial issues including a "mountain of credit card debt", and that he also filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and had a series of marriages, according to Heavy. However, Zimmerman concluded that the shooting wasn't racially motivated, but was a response to Selis and his girlfriend breaking up. That's when the man suddenly pulled out a handgun and shot his friend in the torso, Griffin said.

San Diego pool shooting where Peter Raymond Selis was eventually gunned down by responding police.

The victim's names and conditions have not been released.

A gunman opened fire at a San Diego apartment complex pool on April 30.

"Our hearts go out to all the victims, their families and anyone who witnessed this tragic event", the chief said. He listed $14,000 in assets and $108,000 in liabilities, according to court records.

San Diego Police ask that anyone with additional information on Sunday's shooting contact them. "The 2015 filing said he had, at that time, a 12-year-old daughter, 16-year-old son, and 19-year-old stepson".
