82 freed schoolgirls to meet Nigerian president

82 freed schoolgirls to meet Nigerian president

"The girls are due today (Sunday) in Abuja to be received by the President". ICRC Africa "thinks" the girls have landed in Abuja. He says the president promised they will continue with their education.

The young women have been handed over to government officials who will supervise their rehabilitation, said Adesina.

"We are exceedingly delighted by this good news that has been long awaited following last October when upon the release of our 21 #ChibokGirls, our federal government promised that; another 83 was being negotiated to be released very soon", it said.

" I also appeal to Nigerians not to stigmatize the girls because of the experiences".

Parents of the missing girls expressed anxiety over the fate of their daughters.

It was not immediately clear whether the newly freed girls would join them.

"We are always excited when we have such news. we are excited over one [release].it was as if heaven had come down, imagine, with 82".

The 82 schoolgirls are now in the custody of the Nigerian army and were brought by road convoy from a remote area to a military base in Banki near the border with Cameroon, reports the BBC's Stephanie Hegarty from Lagos.

"A lot of people in Nigeria don't believe that Boko Haram will simply release those girls after three years in captivity for nothing in return", he said.

More than 30,000 others have been killed, the government says, and hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee from their homes.

The girls were released on Saturday, May 6 by the terrorists after a lengthy negotiation that involved the release of two terrorists. It was later revealed that the Chibok girls were not among them.

A military source said the girls were now in Banki near the Cameroon border for medical checks before being airlifted to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

"The location of the girls kept changing since yesterday when the operation to rescue them commenced", said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make the announcement.

Neither the Nigerian president nor Boko Haram, which has links to the Islamic State group, gave details on the exchange.

"The girls are now lodged in the military barracks and will be flown to (the Borno state capital) Maiduguri on Sunday", said the military source.

The campaign for the release of the almost 300 Chibok schoolgirls seized three years ago by Boko Haram says it is glad Nigeria's government is committed to freeing the 113 girls still unaccounted for.

The kidnappings sparked a strong social media reaction, with the phrase #bringbackourgirls tweeted around 3.3 million times by mid-May 2014, and the global campaign which followed backed by then U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama.
