A look at the House Republican health care bill

US President Donald Trump has declared Obamacare "essentially dead" after the Republican healthcare bill was narrowly passed by the House of Representatives.

Democrats said the American Health Care Act will leave millions uninsured, ABC News reported.

Following the House vote, House Republicans celebrated with a press conference at the White House Rose Garden with Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Keen to score his first major legislative win since taking office in January, Trump threw his own political capital behind the bill, meeting lawmakers and calling them in an effort to cajole their support.

Stephen Colbert started Thursday's Late Show monologue with a combination of Star Wars Day and the House Republicans passing their health-care bill, including a cameo from Late Show congressional correspondent Ben Kenobe.

"This is a great plan". Then, "after the vote, one reporter ran into Reince Priebus, who told her, 'The president stepped up and helped punt the ball into the end zone.' Yes, a punt into the end zone - accurate, because it gets zero points and gives your opponent good field position". "If we don't pay lots of ransom money over to the insurance companies, it would die immediately", said Trump.

After rejection six weeks ago, the revised bill will now be passed to the Senate, although it is far from certain that it will make it through the upper house without further changes as some Senators have serious reservations about the bill. "We knew that wasn't going to work".

House Democrats have rejected the latest change to the Republican legislation on Wednesday, saying it did not go far enough toward protecting people with pre-existing conditions.

The CBO report from March, when the last version of the bill was first introduced, concluded that over 10 years, 24 million fewer people would be covered under the bill who otherwise would have had insurance under Obamacare. It would slash funding for Medicaid, the program that provides insurance for the poor, and roll back much of Medicaid's expansion.

The bill also restructures Medicaid payments to the states, reducing federal spending.
