A SC teen died from drinking too much caffeine

NBC News reports that the death of a 16-year-old student last month in SC has officially been deemed a caffeine overdose.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said the teen had no pre-existing heart conditions and was otherwise healthy at the time of his death.

The deputy chief pathologist for Richland County said one cup of coffee or a soda won't cause a cardiac-event like the one that killed Cripe, but said time and the amount of caffeine consumed does play a factor.

Coroner Gary Watts says 16 yr old Spring Hill High student Davis Cripe's death was caused by a ingesting large amounts of caffeine.

The teenager drank a large Mountain Dew, a McDonald's latte and an energy drink two hours before he began experiencing arrhythmia, Watts said.

At a press conference Monday, Cripe's father said he hopes parents will talk to their kids about consuming energy drinks.

A caffeine overdose has been ruled the cause of death of a SC teenager last month, a state coroner reported on Monday.

Among those at the news conference Monday was the teen's father, Sean Cripe.

An autopsy failed to show any kind of preexisting conditions.

EMS received the call about Davis collapsing in class at 2:28 p.m., Watts said. "You can have five people line up, and all of them do the exact same thing with him that day, drink more; it may not have any type of effect on them at all".

He also urged people to avoid highly caffeinated drinks. Healthline reports that the recommended daily caffeine limit should not exceed 400 mg for a healthy adult. A large McDonald's latte reportedly contains approximately 178 mg of caffeine and energy drinks range from 72 to 111 mg of caffeine per serving.

"It wasn't a auto crash that took his life. Parents, please talk to your kids about these energy drinks". But Davis had consumed all three drinks during a two-hour time frame.
