Amazon Shutting Down its Free Amazon Underground Service

Amazon Shutting Down its Free Amazon Underground Service

Amazon is discontinuing its Underground Actually Free program. Amazon then reimbursed the developers depending on how long users spent within the app. The program was regarded as a interesting way to test new ideas and expand Amazon's limited app offerings.

"While we will continue to expand the Amazon Appstore experience, we have made a decision to discontinue the Underground Actually Free programme". Additionally, those with Fire tablets can still download and update apps through Underground until 2019. It was a legitimate reason to choose the Amazon Appstore over the Google Play StoreGoogle Play vs. Amazon Appstore: Which Is Better? These apps often times were not available on Google Play Store, so there was a level of exclusivity with those apps and in-app items available on the Underground platform. "And with Amazon Coins, Appstore customers can save on every game in the Amazon Appstore". Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, as Amazon has announced it will be closing the Underground program and ending access later this year. At the time, Amazon pitched the program as a way for app developers to make money while giving away their software for free via Amazon's online app store.

Launched in 2015, the Underground Actually Free program offered 100 percent free versions of popular premium titles like OfficeSuite Professional 8, Goat Simulator, and PhotoSuite 4 as well as titles with in-app purchases like Frozen Free Fall, Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, Angry Birds Slingshot Stella, and Looney Tunes Dash! Developers can only submit new apps and games until May 31 but anything published before that date can still be updated until 2019.

Amazon Underground is a program where you can get free access to paid apps and paid in-app purchases. It also mentions that Fire tablet access to the Underground store is not going to extend beyond the devices that are now supported. So don't buy the next iteration of Fire tablet and expect to nab a load of freebies. Which means that even owners of existing Fire tablets will be adversely affected. Otherwise we all lose. Customers will retain their content after 2019, but will not be able to download anything else from the Underground Actually Free store.
