Andy Murray beaten by Borna Coric — Madrid Open

Andy Murray beaten by Borna Coric — Madrid Open

World number one Andy Murray said he is "concerned" following defeat by Borna Coric in last 16 of the Madrid Open, but denied being low on confidence.

Murray, 29, looked frustrated throughout as his testing clay-court season continued. "I started the match okay, but when I started to go behind, I didn't find any way to improve my game or to make it more hard for him", Murray told a news conference.

"I haven't played bad, I played really bad", Nadal said. He only made it to the main draw after Richard Gasquet withdrew because of a back injury. "It's going to mean to me a lot", Coric said.

"There is no doubt he didn't play very good".

It was an important opening-round win for the second-ranked Djokovic as he tries to turn his season around and regain his form going into the French Open later this month.

Coric saw it out, gifted two match points by another mistake from Murray, winning it with a drop shot which the Briton could only lift over the net and wide.

However, a couple of forehand mistakes from Coric allowed Murray to break straight back only for the two-time Madrid victor to then lose his serve once more to fall 3-4 behind.

After slogging his way past Nicolas Almagro in the second round, Djokovic was pleased to get the job done without the need for a third set against another Spaniard in Lopez.

Coric broke the fragile Murray serve three times in the first set under the roof at the Manolo Santana centre court due to rain in the Spanish capital.

Belgium's David Goffin is also through to the last eight after producing a dominant display against Canada's Milos Raonic to record a 6-4, 6-2 success.

"I got to stay really positive and I got to play great tennis to beat him". He then earned two break points in the third game but was unable to take advantage.

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic also reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open on Thursday with a straight set victory (6-4 7-5) over Feliciano Lopez.

A finalist in Madrid in 2014, Nishikori is playing in his first tournament since March. He withdrew from Barcelona last month because of a right wrist injury.

It was the 11th straight win for Nadal, and his tour-leading 30th victory for the year.

"I didn't help myself find a way into the match to start playing better".

Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas recovered from losing the second set 6-0 to beat Benoit Paire and will meet Germany's Alexander Zverev, a 6-4 6-4 victor over Tomas Berdych.

On the women's side, third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania reached the semifinals by beating Coco Vandeweghe of the US 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour. "It's always tough to play with someone who has a big serve".

Halep faces Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in Friday's semi-finals after the world number 22 saw off Kiki Bertens 6-3, 6-3.

Kristina Mladenovic of France advanced to the final four by overcoming seven double faults to beat Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 6-4.
